Main features of this WiFi Mesh system

This new WiFi Mesh system is a really complete team at the level of technical specifications, and also at the level of firmware, since it incorporates Asuswrt with all the usual configuration and customization options, ideal to perfectly adapt to our needs.

Wireless features

This new WiFi Mesh system is simultaneous dual band with the new WiFi 6 standard and class AX5400. In the 2.4GHz band we can achieve a speed of up to 574MbpsThanks to the incorporation of two antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration, 1024QAM and the new WiFi 6 standard, this band is just as fast as in the ASUS XD4 and XT8 Mesh WiFi systems. According to the 5GHz band, we can reach a speed of up to 4.804Mbps, thanks to its four antennas in MU-MIMO 4T4R configuration, 1024QAM of quadrature amplitude modulation, and 160MHz of channel width in conjunction with the WiFi 6 standard. This frequency band is four times faster than that of the WiFi Mesh XD4 system, and just as fast as the XT8 interconnection band, therefore, it is really fast.

Have a 160MHz channel width It is essential if we want to achieve really fast speeds, not only compatible wireless clients will benefit, but also the AiMesh nodes that we connect to the WiFi Mesh system. We must remember that not all wireless clients (either WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 support it), for example, the Intel AX200 cards, the ASUS PCE-AX58BT and the PCE-AC58BT do support 160MHz of channel width to make the most of this characteristic. Regarding the benefits of AiMesh nodes, the improvement is clear, we will have double bandwidth with the same number of WiFi antennas, this translates into a really fast backhaul or backhaul network. For example, with the XD4 the backbone worked at a maximum speed of 1,201Mbps, in this new XD6 we will do it at a speed of up to 4,804Mbps, four times faster.

This WiFi Mesh system has all the technologies incorporated in the standard, such as, for example, MU-MIMO, OFDMA, 1024QAM, Beamforming, and also a WPS button to easily connect devices without entering the password. Other important features are that it has Target Wake Time to save energy in IoT devices, it also has WiFi Agile Band so that WiFi roaming is really fast and without interruption in the connection. Of course, this WiFi Mesh system is compatible with ASUS AiMesh technology, so we will have WiFi roaming and band steering between the different nodes in a totally transparent way.

Wired Features

Regarding the wired characteristics, we have One Gigabit Ethernet port for the Internet WAN, the firmware supports the 802.1Q standard to obtain the Internet connection if you use FTTH operators that use VLANs, in addition, it also supports VLANs per port to provide IPTV and VoIP services, and, in addition, it also has profiles such as Movistar Triple VLAN FTTH, so it is compatible with the blue carrier to replace your router completely.

Regarding the LAN, we have a total of 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN with support for Jumbo Frames. In this case, the firmware does not incorporate the possibility of configuring a Link Aggregation. A very important detail is that we can configure the WiFi Mesh network with wired interconnection, from the LAN of the AiMesh router we will connect a cable to the WAN of the AiMesh node, and in this way, we will have a backhaul or interconnection network running at 1Gbps via cable.

Firmware

The firmware that ASUS has incorporated in this router is the same Asuswrt of its top-of-the-range routers, we will have a complete firmware with support for AiMesh, advanced management of the meshed network, possibility of creating WiFi for guests, configure AiProtection Pro with your corresponding IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) that will allow us to block external access attempts and also malware, we will be able to configure parental control based on time and content, adaptive QoS to prioritize services such as games, 4K streaming and Other categories, we also have the traditional QoS to configure the parameters manually, and we can even configure the bandwidth limiter.

Of course, in the firmware we can configure in detail the part of the WiFi network, including the possibility of having WPA2 / WPA3-Personal to have greater security, although you must remember that AiMesh does not currently support WPA3-Personal only, the interconnection between the nodes must be done with WPA2 yes or yes. Other advanced functions are to configure the LAN and WAN part in detail, in addition, we can configure several OpenVPN and IPsec servers, and even the new VPN Instant Guard that will allow us to connect with the ASUS Router app for smartphones, this VPN is very easy to activate and is ideal for users who do not know very well how to configure OpenVPN or IPsec.

Finally, this equipment has full support for IPv6 networks, it has the possibility of configuring the firewall based on iptables in detail, and we also have advanced tools to diagnose the local network and the Internet, and advanced administration options, such as activating the SSH server. to manage the equipment by commands. That is, we have the main options that any ASUS router incorporates, except for the “Game” part of high-end gaming routers, but we do have adaptive and traditional QoS, both tools work very well to prioritize games and have the best user experience.

Best ASUS 10G Multigigabit and WiFi 6 network cards for your PC

ASUS 10G and Multigigabit Wired Network Cards

The manufacturer ASUS currently has two models of very interesting 10G network cards, because they have the latest 10G technology to achieve speeds of up to 10Gbps through the wired network, and because their price is very competitive, being approximately 90 euros. . Thanks to these cards, we can achieve real speeds of 9.8Gbps speed, as long as you use switches compatible with these 10G speeds. Next, we are going to show you the two models that ASUS currently has.

ASUS XG-C100C: The best 10G Multigigabit card for your PC

This model of network card connects directly to a PCI-e 2.0 x4 port on the motherboard, due to the high speed it will provide, it has this type of interface and we will have to “tap” it directly to the motherboard. This card model has an RJ-45 port, capable of synchronizing at the typical speeds of 100Mbps, 1Gbps and also at a speed of 10Gbps, being its maximum synchronization speed.

A very important feature is that this model supports the NBASE-T standard, or also known as “Multigigabit”. This means that, depending on the switch and the network cabling, we can synchronize at speeds of 2.5G and 5Gbps, ideal to adapt to the environment. If you have a 2.5G or 5G Multigigabit switch, this model will serve you perfectly for the future, because it supports these speeds and also reaches up to 10Gbps.

Other important features are that it supports speed auto-negotiation, auto MDI / MDIX, jumbo frames up to 16K, supports the 802.1Q VLANs standard, and of course 802.1P for QoS priority queues. This model is compatible with all operating systems, both Windows in its latest version Windows 10, as well as Linux if we have a kernel version 4.4 or higher.

Taking into account that this 10G Multigigabit network card is worth only about 90 euros and even less if we have it on offer, it is clear that it is the best option if you want to greatly accelerate the home local network, and also your professional network.

ASUS XG-C100F: SFP + port for fiber

If you have a switch where fiber ports predominate, the XG-C100F model is exactly the same as the previous one, but instead of having an RJ-45 port it has an SFP and SFP + port (at 10Gbps) for connections. If we use a transceiver and a fiber cable, we can connect this network card directly to the switch to achieve speeds of 1Gbps or 10Gbps. In this case, there are no Multigigabit speeds on the SFP / SFP + ports.

If you are close to the switch to which you are going to connect your PC, you will always be able to buy a DAC cable that will allow you to save a lot of money compared to buying two transceivers and the fiber cable, because the DAC cable already has everything you need to perform the connection, with the limit of a maximum distance of 7 meters.

This model of ASUS network card is also priced at just 90 euros, a great alternative to the XG-C100C, but with fiber optics and an SFP + connector. You must remember that you will need a switch with fiber ports and SFP or SFP + to be able to use this network card.

ASUS WiFi 6 Wireless Network Cards

This card must be installed directly in an available PCIe slot on the computer’s motherboard, once installed in the PCIe slot, we will have WiFi connectivity. If we also want to have Bluetooth connectivity, we must connect the internal cable to an internal USB on the board, otherwise we will not have Bluetooth 5.0.

This network card is dual band selectable, we can get a speed up to 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and one speed up to 2.402Mbps on the 5GHz band. This model has two external antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration for the two frequency bands. This model has all the technologies incorporated in WiFi 6 such as MU-MIMO for the two frequency bands, OFDMA and also Beamforming.

A very important characteristic is that it supports 160MHz of channel width in the 5GHz band, thanks to this, we can achieve a theoretical speed of up to 2.4Gbps, however, in the performance tests that we have carried out in RedesZone we have achieved real speeds of approximately 1.2Gbps, therefore, we are facing a faster wireless network card than the typical Gigabit Ethernet standard that we all know.

This model has a WiFi base where we can connect external antennas, because they have an RP-SMA connector. In this way, we can put the network card on the table to have the best possible reception. We also have a low profile bracket in case you need it in your computer case. This network card is compatible with all operating systems, including Windows and also Linux, because the chipset used is the Intel AX200, the predominant card today in desktop computers, laptops and PCIe network cards like this one.

ASUS PCE-AX3000

This ASUS PCE-AX3000 model is the low cost version of the previous model. This network card will achieve the same speed in the two frequency bands, it also has MU-MIMO, OFDMA and Beamforming, in addition to the 160MHz of channel width in the 5GHz band. It is a great low-cost option to the previous model, as long as you are not interested in the additions that the previous version has.

The differences between this model and the PCE-AX58BT are as follows:

  • It does not have a metal heatsink on the top, to keep the temperature of the Intel AX200 under control
  • You do not have a WiFi antenna base to place your antennas in the best possible position, they must be located behind the PC.

The rest of the technical specifications are exactly the same, there is no difference, it also includes the Intel AX200 chipset for wireless network and Bluetooth.

As you have seen, today at ASUS we have accessories to accelerate the wired and wireless network of our PC for very little money, in addition, in RedesZone we make use of both the ASUS XG-C100C wired network card, as we have set up a 10G Multigigabit network in our home and for performance tests with switches and NAS servers that have 10G connectivity. In the case of connecting to the WiFi network with our desktop PC, we also make use of the ASUS PCE-AX58BT model and the operation is simply perfect.

Which router has 10G and WiFi 6 ports?

These ports can function as both Internet WANs and LANs, although these days the most common thing is that you configure them as LANs to have the best performance on the local network.

On a wireless level, this router is also top of the range. Incorporates Simultaneous dual band with Wi-Fi 6 (Wi-Fi AX6000), therefore, in the 2.4GHz band we can achieve a speed of up to 1.148Mbps and in the 5GHz band we can achieve a speed of up to 4.804Mbps. This router has a total of four antennas in MU-MIMO 4T4R configuration for the 2.4GHz band and a MU-MIMO 8T8R configuration in the 5GHz band, as it supports 160MHz channel width to provide the best possible performance. This router has all the technologies of WiFi 6 such as Beamforming, MU-MIMO Y OFDMA for the two frequency bands, Target Wake Time Y Agile Multiband WiFi to optimize WiFi roaming between nodes with AiMesh.

With previous ASUS WiFi cards we can achieve a theoretical maximum speed of up to 574Mbps in 2.4GHz and up to 2.402Mbps in 5GHz, because the card incorporates two MU-MIMO 2T2R antennas. In our tests we have verified that the real speed that we will achieve in 2.4GHz is around 350Mbps, and in the 5GHz band we will achieve approximately 1,200Mbps, therefore, in the 5GHz band we will exceed the Gigabit speed.

Unboxing of this WiFi 6 and USB 3.0 router

This new ASUS RT-AX68U wireless router is Simultaneous dual band with Wi-Fi 6 AX2700. Configuration manual of any ASUS router with Pepephone ADSL

Configuration of ASUS routers for Pepephone ADSL under the Masmóvil network

We have made the configuration manual with a router ASUS DSL-AC68U, one of the current top-of-the-range manufacturers with simultaneous dual band and AC1900 Wi-Fi. This router is capable of providing us with a speed of up to 600Mbps in 2.4GHz, and up to 1,300Mbps in the 5GHz band, in addition, it incorporates a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet port for the WAN and also four Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN. The xDSL modem supports both ADSL2 + and VDSL2. Tutorial to configure ASUS router with Pepephone ADSL operator

The first thing we have to do is connect the telephone cable to the router’s xDSL port (RJ-11), then we must connect a network cable to one of the Gigabit Ethernet ports of the router and enter via web in your admin panel. The default web address is http://192.168.1.1 and we must enter the access credentials by default, the user «admin»And key«admin«As soon as we enter, we will get a configuration wizard that will allow us to change the default access password, configure the Internet connection and configure the wireless network.

The first thing we see as soon as we enter the configuration wizard, is the password change:

Once we have entered the password we want to access the router’s administration website, it will take us to a new menu that will detect the type of connection automatically. The firmware on this router is capable of detecting the xDSL connection and self-configuring to simplify the configuration process as much as possible.

After a few seconds, the router is not able to detect the configuration because we use a VLAN ID, so we must do it manually. At this point, we have two options, select «Spain» and the Pepephone profile that is already preloaded in the router (Note: the preloaded profile on June 15, 2017 is Pepephone under the Vodafone network, therefore it would not serve us. In future firmware versions this profile will be updated.), or do it manually including the following parameters:

  • PPPoE
  • VPI: 8
  • VCI: 32
  • Encapsulation: LLC
  • VLAN ID: 20

These data are what Pepephone makes available to its customers to configure the routers, we recommend that you put exactly the same data from the previous capture so that you do not have any problems:

Once we have configured the VCI, VPI and VLAN, we only need to put the username and the PPPoE password and click on next:

  • User: adsl @ masmovil
  • Password: masmovil

Features and unboxing of this WiFi Mesh

Main features

This new ASUS ZenWifi AX Mini XD4 Mesh Wi-Fi system is Simultaneous dual band with Wi-Fi 6 AX1800. In the 2.4GHz band we can get one speed up to 574Mbps, thanks to its two internal antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration, the 40MHz channel width and the Wi-Fi 6 it incorporates. In the 5GHz band we can get one speed up to 1.201Mbps, thanks to its two internal antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration, the 80MHz channel width and the Wi-Fi 6 it incorporates. In this 5GHz frequency band we do not have the 160MHz of contiguous channel width available, therefore, we can achieve up to 1,201Mbps and not up to 2,402Mbps. This router has all the technologies incorporated in Wi-Fi 6, such as, for example, MU-MIMO in both frequency bands, OFDMA, and TWT for energy saving among other functions. Of course, being a Wi-Fi Mesh system, we have Wi-Fi roaming and also band steering if we have Smart Connect activated.

Although the maximum number of nodes in the pack is 3 (a router and two AiMesh nodes), we can easily expand it with another pack of more AiMesh nodes or routers, as it is compatible with AiMesh we can integrate the AiMesh devices into the Wi-Fi system compatible ASUS manufacturers. In addition, this equipment has the latest AiMesh graphical user interface, therefore, we will have extensive wireless configuration options.

We can also configure the firewall, all the ASUS router management options, view detailed system logs, and access different network tools such as ping, traceroute, nslookup and more.

The most remarkable thing about the firmware is that it will allow us to configure the WiFi Mesh system in detail, allowing us to choose which uplink node we want for a certain node, and we even have an «Optimize» button to automatically recalculate all the paths to the main router, and always provide us with the best possible performance.

DNS over TLS DoT configuration on ASUS routers with Asuswrt Merlin

In the latest Asuswrt Merlin firmware available for many ASUS router models, they have incorporated the possibility of configuring DNS over TLS, a protocol that will allow us to have greater privacy on the Internet, since all queries will be made encrypted using the TLS protocol. Today in RedesZone we are going to teach you step by step how to configure DNS over TLS in this firmware, using a router ASUS RT-AX88U.

DNS over TLS (DoT) configuration manual on any ASUS router with Asuswrt Merlin

The first thing we have to do is go to the section «WAN / Internet connection«, Since this is where we will have to configure everything related to the DNS servers.

In the zone of “DNS WAN configuration»We can activate the support DNSSECSince DNS over TLS and DNSSEC can work together, in fact, they complement each other. In the option we have available called «DNS Privacy Protocol»Is where we must choose the protocol DNS over TLS (DoT) that we have available.

Once we have selected DoT, it will tell us if we want it to be “Strict” or “Opportunistic”, the difference between them is:

  • Strict– Only allowed to use if remote DNS server identity can be authenticated, otherwise it won’t work.
  • Opportunistic– Authentication will be attempted on the remote DNS server, but if this fails, DNS queries will succeed.

One of the strengths of Asuswrt Merlin is that they have incorporated a list of DNS servers that support the DNS over TLS protocol. The best known DNS servers are those of Cloudflare, Google and Quad9, therefore, we will be able to choose any of them and even several. An important detail is that we also have DNS for IPv6 networks, in this way, if we surf the Internet with this protocol, we can also use DoT with IPv6.

To add several DNS with DoT support, just select it in the list, and this information will automatically appear in the boxes below, by clicking on “+” it would be enough to add them. If we add only one DNS we will have this as primary, and in case of failure we will be left without being able to make DNS resolutions. It is advisable to add at least 2 DNS servers, in our case, we have added 3, but we can add a maximum of 8 DNS servers:

Once we have added all the DNS servers, we must click on «Apply». Although at first it is not necessary to restart the router, we have noticed a certain slowness when browsing, but when restarting the router the navigation is perfect. For this reason, We recommend you restart the router after making this change.
