QNAP QHora-301W firmware review with all options

A good firmware must be optimized for the hardware where it is working, it must have a fast graphical user interface and with a good design, finally, a good firmware must have dozens of configuration options so that novice users and the most expert can configure the router to your liking.

The firmware of the QNAP QHora-301W router is fast, with a really friendly graphical user interface, and it has dozens of configuration options. We must bear in mind that we are facing a router oriented to the professional field. Some of the most relevant characteristics of this router is the possibility of configuring an SD-WAN thanks to the QuWAN technology from QNAP. This technology allows us to interconnect different QHora-301W routers through the Internet via IPsec VPN, in this way, we can establish Site-to-Site VPN tunnels between the different venues. QNAP Remote Manager Plus (QRM +): Monitor and manage computers

Thanks to QRM +, we will be able easily manage the company’s IT infrastructure, and all this easily and quickly, since all actions are carried out through a control panel with a very intuitive graphical interface. In this control panel we can see in real time all the registered teams, and we will be able to follow all the important parameters such as CPU consumption, RAM, disk use, use of the local network, the status of the system’s power supply, etc. Some of the notable options are that we can create fully custom alerts, so that you can notify us in case we reach a certain level of RAM or disk occupation, for example. These notices are made in the graphical interface of the control panel, or you will directly send us the information by email.

One of the QRM + strengths is that it will allow us to save a lot of time in implementing this monitoring system, since simply we must install an “agent” on Windows or Linux computers we want to monitor and manage remotely, the rest will be done by QRM + which is installed on the QNAP NAS server.

Installing QNAP Remote Manager Plus on the NAS server

The QRM + installation is really easy and fast, we simply have to enter the administration of our QNAP NAS via the web, go to “App Center” and search for “QRM”. The search engine will provide us with two results, that of QRM + and QRMAgentPack. We must click on the first one, the QRM +, and click on the “Install” button.

By clicking on “Install”, the installation wizard will inform us that you also have to install other additional software on the NAS for QRM + to work properly, we accept this installation and the process will begin. We will not have to intervene at all, we will only wait a few minutes until all the software is downloaded and the installation completes successfully.

Once we have installed QRM + on our NAS, we will see how to access the administration of said program.

Starting up QNAP Remote Manager Plus

To access the QRM + administration, we simply have to click on the icon that has been created on the NAS desktop. When it asks for our credentials, we will enter the NAS administration username and password. The first menu that we will have is to add devices to QRM +, and it will ask us if we know exactly which devices to manage, or we want it to perform a scan on our network and then select it.

We have chosen «Search your network and then select», in the second step it will show us the range of IP addresses that we are using, we proceed with the search by clicking on «Start exploration». If we wait a few seconds, it will show us a list with all the hosts it has located, and if they can be managed or not. We must remember that the hosts that you can currently manage are Windows, Linux computers and also IPMI devices (although not all IPMIs).

Currently QRM + does not allow the management of QTS devices (QNAP NAS), but seeing the message that it returns, it is very possible that in future versions of this software it will. The installation wizard of this software does not have much difficulty, it will simply tell us that we must confirm our IP address, and then enter the username and password to authenticate in the QRM +, in this way, this software will link correctly with the QRM + server.

Once installed, we click on “Finish”, we must not forget to start this service for the first time so that QNAP can quickly add it to the centralized management of QRM +.

Once we have done it, we must wait about a minute for QRM + to add it to the control panel, and we can begin to centrally monitor and manage this device.

QNAP Remote Manager Plus Administration

In the QRM + control panel is where we can see the status of each and every one of the computers that we have registered. We will be able to see the disk usage, CPU usage, RAM and a long list of parameters since this control panel is configurable through Widgets.

To register a new Widget, we simply have to click on the “+” icon in the upper right. We choose which widget we want to add, we have selected the one for “CPU Utilization (Live)”, click on next and select the device to which we want to apply this widget. Once we have selected the equipment, we add it and we can see it in the control panel.

As you can see, in the main menu we can see this new widget in detail, with CPU usage and a hyperlink to the monitoring of that specific host.

Other Widgets that we can add here are RAM memory usage, disk usage, real-time network usage, status change log, performance monitor and other IPMI-related widgets that we can register and see everything in the control Panel.

If we click on our PC, we will be able to see all the characteristics of the equipment, such as the host name, motherboard manufacturer, CPU, RAM, operating system, IP addresses, real-time CPU usage, RAM memory usage, disk usage etc.

In this menu we can also configure the RDP protocol to remotely manage our own PC, in the purest TeamViewer style but all through QRM +. If we click on the “All devices” section, we can see all the computers that we have registered.

This is what we look like when using the RDP protocol to remotely manage our own operating system. We can easily interact as if we were in front of the computer.

As we have said before, QRM + allows us to create different alerts, we will be able to create an alert for, for example, CPU usage, RAM, disk and power status of the equipment (if it is on). Of course, we can set different conditions, if for example we put “> 4” it means that it will send us an alert if we exceed 4% of RAM memory usage. This alert that we believe can be applied to all the equipment that we have registered in QRM +, in this way, we greatly facilitate the management of alerts when we have dozens of equipment.

The logs section is where we can see the information or error logs that the QRM + system has detected, in addition, we will be able to create different users to access the QRM + system itself, so that our IT team is also able to enter correctly and without any problem. Of course, we will be able to configure the email to correctly notify us of any alert that we have previously configured. It will also allow us to configure the time that all alert logs, notifications, historical data, KVM video recordings and system logs will be stored.

Finally, in the “QRMAgent Repository” section we can see the QRMAgent software that is currently available to manage different computers. We currently have for Windows x86, Windows x64, Ubuntu, CentOS and Debian 8.

To add this second team, we go to the “Identify device” section, and click on our own team to add it. An installation wizard that we have known before will automatically run. What is SSD over-provisioning on QNAP NAS servers

Solid State Drives (SSDs) persistently store data, just like conventional mechanical hard drives. The big difference is that SSDs provide a much higher performance both in reading and writing, but especially when we perform random reads / writes. Due to the great price drop that these types of disks are experiencing, users can buy these types of disks to accelerate the performance of their NAS. When we install an SSD, we have two very important things in mind: maximizing system performance and preventing early degradation of the SSD itself.

The performance of an SSD can be degraded by performing “garbage collection” to free up blocks when the disk is full. This results in many writes (write amplification) to the disk itself, reducing not only performance, but also its lifespan.

What is SSD over-provisioning?

SSD over-provisioning allows us to solve the write amplification problem that we discussed earlier, reserving space on the SSD for writes and garbage collection. Some manufacturers reserve 7% of the total disk size by default, but it is possible to reserve more to increase the performance and also the durability of the SSD.

The additional over-provisioning feature of SSD allows us to allocate a space of between 1% and 60%, ideal for optimizing random write speeds, and also increasing its useful life. In addition, QNAP incorporates a tool to evaluate which over-provisioning ratio we should use, taking as a target a certain IOPS value. In this way, the system will recommend the best option, and we will be able to see the estimated result before configuring it.

QNAP has found that setting a 40% over-provisioning on a Samgung 850 SSD allows the number of IOPS to be increased by 100%. In the event that we choose to configure a RAID 1 of two 512GB SSDs, with only reserving an over-provisioning of 20%, we will have more than double the IOPS.

The over-provisioning function works with any SSD, be it with SATA, M.2 or NVMe SSD interface. In addition, we will be able to activate this function if we use SSD Caché or automated storage by Qtier levels, regardless of the type of RAID chosen with these two functions to accelerate the performance of our NAS. A very important detail is that we can only configure this over-provisioning with the QTS version 4.3.5 or higher, and in addition, we will have to create a new storage space, it cannot be set for SSD cache or SSD volumes that already exist.

How is over-provisioning configured in QNAP?

Thanks to the SSD profiling tool, we will be able to test the SSD random write performance with a percentage that we define, to later start it in the menu to create SSD Caché or Qtier.
