Learn how to configure the Edimax BR-6208AC router in universal repeater mode

The first thing we have to do is connect the router to the electric light and via network cable to a computer. Once it is on, we open the web browser and enter the URL in the address bar http: //edimax.setup. This URL will take us directly to the administration of the router, and if it is the first time you configure it, the configuration wizard will appear Smart iQ Setup by Edimax.

Click on next and it will indicate a simple network configuration scheme, where we can see how the router will work in this mode. It will also make us a basic recommendation that applies to all Wi-Fi repeaters: the placement of the equipment must be halfway between the main router and the client where it does not have good coverage.

One of the strengths of this router is that it allows you to configure it in universal repeater mode with simultaneous dual band, that is, we can repeat the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously, and in turn connect to the “extended” networks that creates. Other routers and repeaters only allow us to connect to one band, and later broadcast on both bands, so performance will be limited by the first link.

Set the slave Edimax Gemini RE11S in Media Bridge mode

The Media Bridge configuration mode allows the Gemini RE11S to simply act as a Wi-Fi client, providing wired connectivity through its Gigabit Ethernet port. Either of the two RE11S can be put in Media Bridge mode, in fact, both of them could be configured at the same time to connect them directly to the router, although this is not their main function.

Once we have entered the configuration wizard, the first thing to do is click on the button «Introduction«. How to configure QoS quality of service on the Edimax Gemini RG21S router

The first thing we have to do is enter the configuration menu through the default gateway, by default the URL will be http://192.168.2.1 with user “admin” and password “1234”. When we enter the configuration menu, we will see something like this:

To go to the quality of service (QoS) configuration menu, we must look on the left side of the menu for “QoS”. Once we are inside we must click on “Enable QoS” and click on “Apply”Below you will get a message indicating that the changes will not be applied until the router is restarted, but we can do this later, nothing happens because now we will not restart it.

If we have not introduced any rule, the Edimax menu will be like this:

In this menu you must click on «Add», and then it will take you to another menu where you must indicate the IP address or range of source IP addresses where the limitation is applied, we can also define different destination IPs, filter by type of traffic ( HTTP, SMTP and others) and even filter or limit by TCP and UDP protocol, ideal to limit certain services only, such as BitTorrent clients that use TCP / UDP ports.

To give you an example, we have configured the QoS to limit the bandwidth to a maximum of 10Mbps, that is, although we have 200Mbps symmetric for the Internet, the client that we have defined by its internal IP will only be able to obtain a maximum of 10Mbps of download. The configuration made is as follows:

  • Download 10000Kbps MAX
  • Local IP address: our private IP
  • Local Port range: empty (this means any port)
  • Remote IP address: empty (this means any destination IP)
  • Remote Port range: empty (this means any port)
  • Typical traffic: the speed test uses HTTPS, therefore there is no option available.
  • Protocol: TCP (HTTPS uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) below, and below it uses TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)).

Once rule number 1 has been created, the QoS menu will be as follows:

If we launch a speed test, the download speed will be what we have applied. With a limitation of 10000Kbps, the computer is unable to download more than 11.30Mbps, therefore the QoS has worked correctly. We must indicate that, although we have not obtained just 10Mbps, this behavior is completely normal.

Now we are also going to limit the Internet upload, we go back into the QoS menu and the second rule (the first rule we do not delete) that we will configure will be exactly the same as the first, but indicating the “Load” and not the ” Download »as above.

The configuration made is as follows:

  • Load 10000Kbps MAX
  • Local IP address: our private IP
  • Local Port range: empty (this means any port)
  • Remote IP address: empty (this means any destination IP)
  • Remote Port range: empty (this means any port)

How to install the Edimax EU-4208 and EU-4306 adapters on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X

The manufacturer itself offers on its website the possibility of downloading the driver installers for both devices, having the necessary software to use the computer with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, Mac OS X and Linux distributions.

Before starting with the detailed installation process, we will first choose the driver that we have to download. If we have the adapter Edimax EU-4208 we can do the download the drivers from here.

Although we are going to do it using the drivers of the second of the adapters, the process is identical in both, therefore, you will not find any problem.

How to install the driver for Edimax EU-4208 and EU-4306 adapters

Before starting with the different operating systems, one very important thing must be taken into account: The adapter must NOT be connected before installing the software, as otherwise the driver may not be installed correctly or a wrong driver that is already present in the system may be associated with the device.

Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8

We downloaded the compressed file that occupies approximately 29 MB to the system. After extracting the contents of the ZIP folder, we observe that inside there are three folders, one for each operating system except in the case of the XP driver, which also works for Vista.

After accessing the corresponding folder, we must look for an executable called setup. In the beginning it would not be necessary to run with administrator permissions. If during the process it returns some kind of error, you right-click on the file and select “Run as administrator” and these problems will disappear.

The window is likely to disappear, leaving only a tab on the system taskbar that cannot be opened. There is no need to worry, it is normal and depending on the power of the equipment in less than a minute the installation will finish and the following window will appear:

Linux

In the case of Linux operating systems, the file we download is a .tar. Although the terminal can cause panic to many, in this case it is the fastest way to install the driver successfully.

First of all we have to take into account where we have made the download and go to it with the command CD. Once we have reached the folder we have to use the command tar xvf filename.tar.tar to proceed with the extraction.

Set the Edimax EW-7822PIC Wi-Fi card in ad hoc mode in Windows

The Edimax EW-7822PIC card does not incorporate management software to manage wireless connections or to create an access point and for other clients to connect, this feature is incorporated by other models. Set up a captive portal with Front Desk Manager on the Edimax APC500

The first thing we have done is create a user assigned to a group «Front Desk Manager»Called«SergioAdmin«, The second user we have created is called«sergio guest»Belonging to the« Guest Portal User »group. In the previous manual we explained how to create the different users and assign them to the different groups, once we have it done, we must go to the part of «Guest Portal»And put the “Dynamic Users” option in “Guest Portal Type«.

Once we have chosen it, we must leave the default options since by default it will take the database of local users that we have created to manage both the users assigned to Front Desk Manager as the user “sergioAdmin” and also the guest users as “sergioInvitado”. We simply have to give the typical name to the captive portal and a description, to later assign this captive portal created to the guest Wi-Fi network as can be seen here:

The most important thing to start user management through Front Desk Manager is to locate the access URL, in the configuration menu of the captive portal we have seen a URL of this type: http://192.168.2.1/frontdesk.html. It is mandatory to have selected “Dynamic Users” and to have created a user within the Front Desk Manager group to be able to enter and register new guest users. We have created the user “sergioAdmin”, and as soon as we enter the URL http://192.168.2.1/frontdesk.html we will see something like this:

Once we have logged in, we will be shown two main menus:

  • Guest Account Wizard: This option will allow us to create a guest user easily and quickly.
  • Guest Account Monitor: It will allow us to see the status of the Wi-Fi clients that have logged into the captive portal.

This option will allow us to create a guest user easily and quickly, assigning it a period of days or hours of validity, the SSID to which it must connect, the username and the password it must use. Another option that this Edimax APC500 allows us is to enter a phone number to send the credentials by SMS (we must have previously configured an SMS sending service in the Wi-Fi controller):

If we click on «Next» we will see a summary of the configuration that we have specified:

As you can see, the username is “Guest_3” and we can print these credentials to give them to the client, the second option is to send them an SMS with this information.

Once we have created the different users through Front Desk Manager, we will see their data such as the username with the description, the phone number, the status of the client (if they are connected at that moment or not, if the account etc) as well as print the data, send it by SMS and even block access easily.
