new external hard drive with higher performance

WD has launched a new high-performance external hard drive. The new external hard drive is called My Book Duo and its main characteristic is that has two bays to accommodate 3.5-inch hard drives with a capacity of up to 4TB per disk, so we could have a storage capacity of up to 8TB.

Technical characteristics of the WD My Book Duo

This team allows you to configure a RAID 0 for maximum performance and capacity. It also allows configure a RAID 1, configuring it in mirror mode so that all data on one disk is automatically replicated on the other, in this way if one disk fails, the data on the other hard disk will be safe.

Finally, the My Book Duo also allows to configure them in JBOD mode to use the two drives individually, without additional performance (RAID 0) or additional security (RAID 1).

The hard drives that it incorporates by default are known WD Red, hard drives specifically oriented to NAS servers thanks to their high performance, low consumption and low operating temperature, ideal for a high performance external hard drive like this device.

In terms of connectivity with PCs, this WD My Book Duo incorporates a USB 3.0 connection to provide maximum performance. Based on WD testing, we can reach a transfer speed of up to 290MB / s. It also incorporates two USB 3.0 ports to connect other external hard drives and make a backup copy on their internal drives, it also allows charging mobile devices.

In order to protect your data from prying eyes, this computer provides AES 256-bit hardware encryption with password protection.

Backups: Top Priority

The main priority of this external hard drive is to save a backup of our most important documents, for this reason, it allows us to make backup copies locally, backup copies in the cloud and also copies of the system itself thanks to the copy software WD SmartWare Pro Automatic Backup.

It also allows us to perform these backups with the popular Acronis True Image software. The well-known Dropbox cloud storage service is perfectly integrated into the WD software, allowing a comprehensive backup to be made in the cloud.

The WD My Book Duo is priced at € 329 for the 4TB drive, € 379 for the 6TB and € 499 for the 8TB capacity. All models come with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Meet these new Quad-Core NAS with PCI-Express

Main Features of the QNAP TS-253Be and TS-453Be NAS

The main characteristics of these new NAS servers are that they have a processor Intel Celeron J3455 Quad-Core clocked at 1.5GHz, although it can go up to 2.3GHz in Turbo mode when higher computing power is required. This CPU supports AES-NI, so the performance when we encrypt and decrypt data with AES will be excellent, giving us almost the same speed as if we transfer files without encryption. NAS servers are sold in 2GB and 4GB versions of DDR3L RAMAlthough both models can be expanded up to a maximum of 8GB of RAM.

The only difference between the TS-253Be and TS-453Be is the number of bays, and therefore, the possibility of making different types of RAID with its bays. The TS-253Be model has 2 bays to house hard drives, and the TS-453Be model has a total of 4 bays to house hard drives. The interfaces are SATA3 with up to 6Gbps speed.

Other characteristics of these two new NAS is that they have two Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN with Link Aggregation support, it has a total of 5 high-performance USB 3.0 ports, two HDMI v1.4b outputs with resolution up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 FPS, two 3.5mm jack inputs for microphone, and also an audio jack output 3.5mm. This NAS features 4K resolution transcoding with H.264 / H.265 to provide a better multimedia experience.

The most characteristic of this NAS server is that it has a PCI-Express 2.0 x2 slot, thanks to this PCI-Express port we will be able to connect a expansion card with support for M.2 SSD and use it as cache acceleration, a 10G network card either 10GBASE-T or SFP +, and even an expansion card that incorporates both the 10G network port, as well as two M.2 SSDs to increase the performance of the NAS in a way exponential. Other expansion cards that we have available are, for example, a card with 10Gbps USB 3.1 ports, and even a QWA-AC2600 Wi-Fi card.

In RedesZone we have already tested what QNAP expansion cards are capable of, specifically, we have tested the QM2 that allows us to have 2 slots for M.2 SSD and use it as a cache and also as Qtier, in addition to a 10GBASE-T port for get speeds of up to 10Gbps on the local network.

QTS operating system: All the usual options

At the heart of these new NAS we have the same QTS operating system as the rest of the family, therefore, we will have a large number of services, configuration possibilities, and a store to install additional software on our NAS server, and all this in a way easy and fast.

These two new NAS servers will soon be available for purchase in the main physical and online stores. We recommend visit our page dedicated to QNAP where you will find product analysis, manuals and user guides.

Network File Server. Freenas.

The alternatives for the conservation of this data go through the fast storage in our hard disk or the recording in multimedia support (DVD, Blueray, etc ..), if your economy is buoyant you can opt for solid state hard disks. The price of optical recording media and the doubt of its persistence over time is the first question that assails us, in addition, it is possible that we do not want to keep the film after having seen it a few times and we want to buy the high version definition of it. A high-capacity hard disk is cheaper and faster in recording-reproduction than a domestic optical medium that can end up in the trash and contaminate if we do not have selective collection in our population.

The disadvantage of hard drives is that our computer has a limited storage capacity on its hard drive, the option is to install additional hard drives. The consequence is an increase in equipment noise, temperature and additional expenditure on cooling means to keep the temperature within reasonable limits (below 40ºC). Starting and stopping the computer puts a mechanical strain on the hard disk and the surprise of running out of the music library that has been so difficult for us to organize with the singers and favorite songs disappears after a message on the screen that indicates that it cannot access to the hard drive.

In We are going to make a series of practical articles so that you can build your own NAS (Network File Server) at low cost with components that are easily located in the market and at an affordable price, in some cases you may already have the components in your home, power supplies that have run out of power after incorporating the graphics card of your dreams that makes the electricity bill rise suspiciously in the eyes of your parents, a Pentium III or AMD Athlon XP motherboard, a suspicious cream-poop computer case, some 80GB IDE hard drives that are dying of loneliness after installing your brand new 1TB drive, all these components will help us to create our file server that the family will use to save and share what does not fit on hard drives.

I will continue shortly with a selection of components in three ranges; Basic, Standard and Advanced NAS and price guide in physical stores or online where to get them at crisis prices. We will use the standard FreeNAS, a free and open source operating system that will allow us to add other services and programs (Bitorrent-Transcoder-VoIP-FTP-WEB server- Mail server- Network printer server- Music player via LAN or Internet …) that will save us having our computer running to watch movies on TV, listen to our music without being at home or create our website and keep it available without paying for hosting services.

And I am going to explain it to you after having a system built, configured and running for 1 year by me, no theory, real practice. A few screenshots of the equipment running since the last update, it already has 4Terabytes of capacity.

As you can see, the machine’s microprocessor is Atom, minimal energy consumption and minimal heat dissipation.

In another article we mentioned the usefulness of home servers.

Find out if a NAS supports Plex and video transcoding

For those of you who often follow the content we publish on the portal, you know that we have a section dedicated to NAS devices. Among the manufacturers analyzed, you will find equipment analysis from QNAP, Synology, Thecus, ASUSTOR, WD or D-Link, among others.

Luckily for users, there are many alternatives that allow us to choose the one that best suits our needs, both functionally and economically. Many want to use Plex, and for that it is necessary to know if the processor is compatible with video transcoding. But this is not only the most important thing. In addition to knowing its compatibility, the user must check if the process works correctly with high data rates (that is, known as bitrate).

What is transcoding?

But, first of all, we are going to clarify everything related to this term. Video transcoding is a process that we could consider in real time and that allows you to convert video from one format to another. The purpose is none other than to adapt the format to the one compatible with the multimedia player. As we have said before, that a NAS supports this function does not mean that it works correctly for all data rates. For example, the result can be good at 720p resolutions with a certain not very high rate and bad with the same resolution and using higher data rates.

We could say that there are two types of transcoding depending on the quality of the final result: lossy and lossless. In the first one, the content displayed has a lower quality than the original. In the second, the result obtained has the same quality as the original content. As a consequence, the second implies a greater use of hardware resources, both RAM and processor memory.

Processors and transcoding

After many analyzes, we have some experience to catalog or relate these aspects to each other.

We can say that there are three types of processors depending on whether or not they are compatible with video transcoding:

  • Intel processors: Most of them support video transcoding without problems.
  • ARM processors: Compatible with video transcoding, but there may be limitations with some data rates.
  • ARM processors low-cost: Are those that are not compatible with this function due to the low specifications. These processors are usually equipped mainly in the entry ranges of the manufacturers.

How can I tell if my NAS supports transcoding and works with Plex

To know if our device or the one we have in mind to acquire is compatible with Plex and video transcoding we only have to access one page. To be more precise, this is a document shared by the Plex development team, where we can enjoy updated information quite frequently.

Check NAS equipment compatibility with this multimedia software

As we have seen before, if we want this to be the case, we must forget about the input range and opt for models that make use of Intel processors, hardware with which you get the best results.

Manual to configure the FTP server

Windows operating systems are managed with this protocol from the file explorer itself. If we try to open “Computer” in operating systems with Windows 7, we can write something like this in the address bar: ; By entering this URL, the content of that FTP server will automatically appear in the file explorer.

As you have seen, no username and password are required to access, we are logged in to the FTP as anonymous. We can set permissions for anonymous users to access certain files and users logged into the service with username / password to access others. The permission settings are maximum.

Once the FreeNAS virtual machine is started and we have logged into its web interface (we remember that now, as it is configured in the previous tutorial, it asks us for the login before showing us anything), if we go to “Services” section At the bottom, we can see what FreeNAS offers us. In this case we will show you the “FTP” service.

When selecting FTP, a screen like the one you see below will appear. We show it to you in two images:

  • Port 21 is the default port for this protocol. If we change it, we will have to remember when we want to access it, if we put it in the browser bar we must put: with XX being the new port that we indicate. We do not advise changing the port used by FTP.
  • Maximum number of simultaneous users connected to the FTP server (5).
  • Maximum number of connections per IP (2).
  • Number of login attempts (1).
  • Waiting time from when we log in until we are expelled from the server (600s). This is when, for example, we start to download something, after those 10 minutes, the server “kicks” us but the transfer continues until it is finished.
  • Allow or not root logging (NOT recommended). With this option we will have access to the entire file system of the operating system, including hard drives that we have not strictly configured for the server.
  • Guest login (also called anonymous, without asking you for any information).
  • Path (What folder do we want to share).
  • Banner. Welcome message displayed when requesting login.
  • Allow resume downloads. If, for example, a file is very large and the connection is cut off, we can resume it without starting from the beginning. It is advisable to have it activated.

The rest of the options, for a basic user, are not necessary to modify (neither SSL / TLS, DNS topic, Certificate and private key).

44- ftp2

In case we want to browse the Advanced Mode, we can find options such as limiting the speed of the local user and the anonymous user, read / write permissions or total control for users, groups or others for files and directories. Here we can see a screenshot:

48- ftp649- ftp7

Regarding enabling SSL / TLS, just click on enable SS / TLS and the certificates will be created automatically. We also have the option of creating our own certificate, for this it would be enough to delete what appears in the text box and paste ours there (we created it with OpenSSL).

Once it is enabled, we will be able to access via FTPS (implicit connection) and FTPES (Explicit connection) to the FTP server. It would be enough to put in our FTP client: ftps: // IP (implicit connection) and ftpes: // IP (explicit connection). It is recommended to always use FTPES (explicit connection).

Next, we go to Service Control, and activate FTP so that the process starts and we have our FTP server activated.

45- ftp3

Once configured, if we access from an FTP client such as FileZilla, we see the following:

46- ftp4

A small detail that has happened to us is if we want to access with a user that does NOT have a local directory assigned, the user will not login indicating that the password is incorrect as we can see below:

47- ftp5

And so far we have arrived with the FTP server in FreeNAS, we hope that the main options have been clear to you and you know how to use them. If you have any questions you can put a comment.

The first machine that works as NAS, SAN and DAS from the manufacturer

This new QNAP server incorporates up to 8 bays to accommodate both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives, it also supports both hard drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD). In addition to the high-performance CPU, it incorporates a double Gigabit Ethernet port for the LAN, so we can configure it as Link Aggregation and have up to 2Gbps of bandwidth locally. Additionally, the manufacturer QNAP allows us to optionally incorporate a 10GbE card via PCI Express to further increase this available bandwidth.

Another fundamental characteristic is that incorporates multiple high-performance USB 3.0 ports to connect external hard drives and make backup copies inside as well as to connect printers, UPS etc. One of its star characteristics is that it has a Thunderbolt 2 port to connect our computer directly to the QNAP TVS-871T and transfer files at a higher speed than we would have via local network, in this way the NAS server can function as DAS (Direct Attached Storage). Besides functioning as a NAS server and also as a DAS, it also allows to use it as SAINT thanks to the fact that it supports iSCSI.

With this hardware and the possibility of Thunderbolt, this server is aimed at video editing professionals, in fact according to QNAP it is possible to edit video in 4K resolution and simultaneously transfer files without slowness problems.

What’s new in the operating system

QNAP has also announced the new version of its operating system for NAS, the QTS 4.2 will incorporate the Qsirch application that will allow us to perform searches much faster and more efficient than before. If you have a QNAP NAS, you already have this application available through QNAP App Center for computers with x86 architecture.

Likewise, the graphical interface, the storage manager and other applications such as snapshots, backup copies and restoration of virtual machines as well as the encryption of shared folders have also been renewed and the security of the options of the local network.
