How to use analog and VoIP phones with our FRITZ! Box router

The process to follow is very simple and we are going to divide it into two parts. In the first part, the configuration of the traditional telephone service will be carried out in the router, giving us the possibility when we finish connecting the DOMOs or the cordless telephones that we have in the house directly to the «FON» ports of the router. The second part covers the installation of FRITZ! Fon VoIP phones and their use with traditional phone service. We must bear in mind that, for the second part to work correctly, it is necessary to have done the first part previously. However, the first does not depend on the second.

Configuring the FRITZ! Box router to connect analog phones

Included with the router was a cable that forks into two ends: one for DSL and one for telephones. Keep in mind that in the case of having a telephone rosette we will have to connect the DSL cable to the mouth where there is no microfilter and the telephone cable to the mouth where there is a microfilter. For those installations that have a splitter, the process changes a bit since we have one port for the Internet and another for analog telephony, so the cables will go in each corresponding port.

The termination is done on a single network plug that is connected to the DSL / TEL port of our FRITZ! Box router. Right next to this port are the ports where analog phones can be connected.


The AVM-supplied cable pins may not fit into the outlet of the rosette. In that case we have a converter / adapter for each of the cases, being necessary to respect the colors with which the manufacturer has identified each of the cables and adapters.


Below you can see what is the result of making the connection in a splitter. On the right are the telephones and on the left the port that offers Internet access.


After completing the installation process, we will continue with the configuration process of the FRITZ! Box router. For this we have to enter the web administrator of our device with the gateway that we have assigned and the password that we chose in the first configuration that we made.

When we get to the main screen, we see that there are two aspects that we must configure: Telephony and DECT. Both are off but we are going to focus first on Telephony.

In order to configure a phone number we will have to access the Telephony section found in the menu on the left and then access the option Proper Numbers.

Within Own numbers you can see that there are none configured. To add a new one and activate the service we have to click on the button «New telephone number«.

When starting the tutorial, we will be asked if we want to add an IP service or a fixed telephone network connection. In this case we will have to choose the second option. If what we want to add is a VoIP service we would have to select the first one.

In the next step we will also have to choose between an IP number or a fixed telephone network number. This decision depends on the previous one, in our case it was the configuration of a fixed telephony network so this time we will also opt for the second option.

Unless we are in an office, it is difficult for there to be more than one fixed telephone number, therefore we will leave the first option selected.

To finish we will have to enter our landline phone number. Once we have introduced it and finalized the process, it will be possible to see how the Telephony service already has a telephone number and it is activated.

With this service configured if we connect our DOMO telephone or any cordless telephone to the router’s FON1 and FON2 ports, we will verify that calls can be made and that they work perfectly. So that you do not get scared, it is normal that first a tone and after the normal call tones. The first of all indicates that it is leaving the router to the telephone network and the following indicate that it is waiting for it to go off-hook.

How to connect FRITZ! Fon phones to our FRITZ! Box router

In the first section we said that there were two services that were disabled and that we had to activate them. If we want to add the VoIP terminals, we now have to activate DECT on our router. It is a very simple process and it will only take a minute.

We have to select the DECT tab in the left menu and activate this option, which will seem deactivated.

Many other options appear but in this case we are not going to modify any of them. Perhaps many of you would be interested in activating the ECO function, allowing the router to put this interface in energy saving when it has been inactive for a long time, this option also allows the correct operation of the terminals and receive calls and messages.

DECT also allows a router to operate in repeater mode of another router, allowing an increase in the signal strength of another router.

After having made these adjustments, we only have to link a terminal. For that we will only have to hold down the DECT button and click on the terminal to Connect. In just 20 seconds the terminal will be connected to the base and calls can be made from it.


Both pressing the DECT button continuously and pressing the connect button on the terminal must be done at the same time, otherwise the pairing will not be done.

When the terminal is correctly paired, “Portable X” will appear, the X depending on the number of VoIP devices that are already connected. In addition to these, it will indicate the updated date and time.


With these simple steps you can get more out of the router, allowing you to manage the calls that are made from the router itself, creating lists of family numbers or even a black list of numbers that you do not want them to call, for example business numbers.

The application is completely free and can be found in the Play Store for Android devices and the App Store in the case of devices with an iOS operating system. Installing and using the FRITZ! App Fon

First of all, it must be said that in order to use the application, you must have a FRITZ! Box router with the “telephony” module correctly configured. Box router configured correctly, it is time to open the application.

In the first place and as a security measure, the user is asked to enter the password that the router’s management menu has, preventing anyone from connecting and using the fixed line configured in it.

Once we have entered the password we are going to take a tour of the upper keypad that the application has, starting with «Phone book»Or the router’s phone book. In this tab, the only thing we will find will be all the alarms that we have configured, the answering machines that are configured and the terminals that are or have been connected at least once.

Box section We can find information related to the router to which we are connected, such as the version of the operating system, the model, the LAN IP that it has or information related to the terminal, such as the internal number it has, the answering machine or the name of the device.

In this case, only those appear because the Android device only has those configured. Depending on which option we choose, a list will be sent in text format or a text file will be created with all the formats correctly indicated and detailed with the information available.

Finally we have the option «Settings«. This tab allows you to activate a series of options that allow for example to hide the identification when making the call, choose the ringtone to be used or establish dialing rules to be able to use the landline. If we are going to make use of this last option, it is not necessary to modify it, being more than enough as it is preconfigured by default.

Exiting the main menu you can see how the list of calls shown is that of the Android device. Later we will see how you can view the call log from the landline. It should be noted that in the upper right corner you can see two indicators. Both should be green if we want it to work properly. The one in green indicates that the device is correctly connected to the router but the one in red indicates that it has not been able to access the telephone service, something that in this case has happened because we do not have connected to the corresponding cable that later we will connect.

As we have indicated previously, it is also possible to have access to the list of calls from the fixed line that is stored in the router. To do this it is only necessary to access the tab «Call List»And we will be able to access these calls. They can be filtered by the type of call that is, that is, choose between missed, made or off-hook calls.

Alternatively to «Settings» menu that we have seen previously, we also have a drop-down menu at the bottom of the right that offers all the functions described in the previous one.

As we have said before, the telephone cable was disconnected and for this reason the “Telephony” indicator was red. When connected, the push message that appears in the Android notification bar also changes and indicates that the service is now available.

To see the final result we are going to make a test call. When marking, the option is given to use the native Android application or FRTIZ! App Fon. In this case, we select the first one.

Learn how to reset the D-Link DCH-Z510 Siren, the siren of the mydlink Home ecosystem

At the back of the device we find a small black trigger that will perform several functions, among which are:

  • Activate pairing mode to add us to the base.
  • Activate the unpairing mode to remove ourselves from the base.
  • Reset the device to factory settings.

Once we are in team inclusion mode, we must perform the following action:

  • Pressing the trigger three times in a row in less than 1.5 seconds.

Automatically the LEDs of the siren will turn on indicating that we are in inclusion mode, and in about 20 seconds we will be able to interact with the device without problems. If for any reason the pairing has not worked correctly, we can choose to reset the equipment and reactivate the pairing mode.

Activate unpairing mode to remove ourselves from the base

The unpairing mode is carried out exactly the same as the pairing mode, but in this case we must put the base itself in “exclusion” mode through the hidden menu that we show you in its in-depth analysis.

Once we are in team inclusion mode, we must perform the following action:

  • Pressing the trigger three times in a row in less than 1.5 seconds.

Automatically the LEDs of the equipment will turn on indicating that we are in exclusion mode, and automatically we will no longer appear in the list of Z-Wave equipment.

Reset the device to factory settings

To reset the D-Link DCH-Z510 Siren device and leave it from the factory, we must do an action similar to the one before but somewhat more complex to avoid an accidental reset:

  • Press the trigger four times in a row and on the 4th do not release it (it must be done in less than 1.5 seconds from the first actuation of the trigger).
  • We must keep it pressed until the LEDs that have lit up turn off, once we have released it the LEDs will light up again for 1 second.
  • We will have already reset the factory equipment.
